Alexandra Jesse (PI)
Assistant Professor, Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences

Dr. Jesse investigates how humans recognize speech from hearing and seeing a speaker. She has received a Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 2005. She then worked as a researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics, The Netherlands, before joining the UMass faculty in 2010. Dr. Jesse is also an Executive Board member of the Auditory-Visual Speech Association (AVISA). CV

Graduate Researchers


David Kajander
is a graduate student in Cognitive Psychology. He is interested in audiovisual speech, and is currently working on a project investigating perceptual learning for audiovisual stimuli.

 

 



Elina Kaplan
is a graduate student in the Neuroscience & Behavior doctoral program whose research interests are focused on multimodal processing and selective attention.

 

 

Undergraduate Researchers

Emilee Bates
is studying Communication Disorders with a minor in Education and Psychology. After graduating she plans to attend graduate school to obtain a Master’s degree in Speech language Pathology.

 

 

 

Ashley Boulanger
is studying Communication Disorders and Psychology. After graduating, she plans to attend graduate school to become a certified Speech-Language Pathologist.

 

 

 

Jessica Bowe
is a studying Communication Disorders and Psychology with a focus on Disability and Human Services. She plans to finish her undergraduate degrees and attend graduate school. Her interests include assessment and intervention for individuals with intellectual and developmental disorders, speech perception, psychoacoustics, and diagnostic and rehabilitation audiology.

 

Chantel Brennan
is majoring in Communication Disorders with a minor in Psychology and in Education. After graduating, she plans to attend graduate school and get her masters degree in Speech-Language Pathology. She hopes to one day work with children suffering from Cleft Lip and Palate.

 

 

 

Deanna Ferrante
is majoring in Linguistics with a minor in Psychology and Education. After graduating, she intends to earn a master’s degree of education with a specific focus on students with moderate disabilities. Her career goal is to be an advocate for students with learning disabilities in a secondary education setting.

 

 

Sarah Hammond
is double majoring in Communication Disorders and Linguistics with a minor in psychology and education. She plans to go to graduate school to become a Speech Pathologist and work with children.

 

 

 

Melissa Karp
is a Communication Disorders major with a minor in Psychology. After graduating, she plans to attend graduate school for audiology and focus on the treatment of vestibular disorders.

 

 

Smriti Karwa
is majoring in Communication Disorders and Pre-medical studies with a minor in Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies. She plans to attend graduate school after her undergraduate career.

 

 

 

Emma Leahey
is studying Communication Disorders. After she completes her bachelor’s degree she hopes to attend graduate school and achieve her master’s degree in Speech and Language Pathology.

 

 

 

Sarabeth Parent
is studying Communication Disorders with a minor in Education and Psychology. After she graduates she plans to attend graduate school in New England and obtain a masters degree in Speech and Language Pathology.

 

 

 

 

 

Anna Paterson
is studying Communication Disorders with a minor in Education. After completion of her undergraduate degree, she hopes to attend graduate school and to obtain a degree in Speech and Language Pathology.

 

 

Gabby St Pierre
is studying Linguistics and Anthropology with a minor in French. She is interested in the inter-personal aspects of language, the intersection of language and culture, and is looking to pursue a graduate degree in Linguistics.
